World Press Freedom Day

Zambia joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Press Freedom Day, whose theme for 2015 was "Media and Gender Equality in the Digital Age".

Journalists and other media workers participated in the celebrations, which included workshops, media exhibition and a sporting competition. On the day of commemoration, the journalists took part in a march past from the Main Post office to the Freedom Statue in Lusaka, where speeches were made by the Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services Hon. Chishimba Kambwili, the United Nations Resident Coordinator Janet Rogan, and World Press Freedom Day organising Committee Chairman, Enock Ngoma. The Independent Broadcasting Authority served on the organising committee and its members of staff were present to commemorate the day.

This year, one of the messages that was conveyed was that media must be ethical in their work and should use its platforms for promoting positive change and setting up debate for intelligent discourse and not for hate speech and character assassination.

It is designated by UNESCO as an opportunity to celebrate worldwide the fundamental principles of press freedom; assess the state of press freedom throughout the world; defend the media from attacks on their independence; and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
